Somerset Patriots lose radio voice
(January 21, 2010) The Somerset Patriots lost their "voice" Wednesday.

Brian Bender, known as the "Voice of the Somerset Patriots," resigned after six seasons as the Atlantic League baseball team's radio broadcaster on WCTC 1450-AM.

"It's something I had to do to pursue other opportunities and spend more time with my family," said Bender — who, since January 2007, has split time between New Jersey and Oconomowoc, Wis., where his wife and 14-month-old son reside. "I'm truly grateful for the opportunity the Patriots gave me. It's like leaving a second family. I wish I could stay, but now is a good time to move on."

Best known for his conversational style with the audience and encyclopedic knowledge, the 31-year-old Toms River native called six championship series and two All-Star Games during an eight-year Atlantic League tenure that began with the Newark Bears. He also was the host of a regular video interview segment called "Bender's Corner" on SomersetPatriots.com.

"It was by far the toughest decision of my life because I left a lot of close friends and dedicated listeners," he said. "One of the things I always enjoyed was that, in an area dominated by so many good sports teams, we had so many people tuning in."

The search for the fourth broadcaster in franchise history is under way and applications, which must include a resume and audio clips, are being accepted via e-mail or mail by vice president of public relations Marc Russinoff.

Patriots president and general manager Patrick McVerry pinpointed March as the target date for filling the position, which requires availability for all 140 home and road games from late April to early October.

"It's a big part of who we are," McVerry said. "We're looking for somebody with experience, who knows baseball and has a passion for minor-league baseball. I'm sure we'll find that person."

Bender's knack for translating description and drama was best captured during his signature call of Travis Anderson's championship-clinching, walk-off home run in the 2008 postseason.

"We're all extremely fond of Brian and he's been a significant part of the success that we had while he was here," McVerry said. "I would've wanted no one else calling the games over the last six years. We've gotten so many comments from fans and families listening to the game because he did a great job of making the most simple play sound exciting."
