(January 19, 2010) Steve Babik, the coordinator of the University of Florida's radio network, faces federal charges of distribution and possession of child pornography that were filed on Tuesday.
He has been fired by the school. Thomas F. Kirwin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced the action in United States District Court in Gainesville with one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. According to a release, the charges were the result of an investigation by the Gainesville Police Department, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the North Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The charges claim that on numerous dates between Nov. 2 and Nov. 30, Babik knowingly received, distributed and possessed materials depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Babik faces a mandatory minimum of five years to a maximum of 20 years in prison, up to lifetime supervised release, and a $250,000 fine on the first count. If convicted, the second count could bring a maximum of ten years in prison, up to lifetime supervised release and a $250,000 fine. According to the release: "As to Count One, Babik faces a mandatory minimum of five years to a maximum of twenty years' imprisonment, up to lifetime supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. As to Count Two, Babik faces a maximum of ten years in prison, up to lifetime supervised release, and a $250,000 fine." The university athletic association released a statement: "We were made aware of the investigation in late November and immediately suspended Steve Babik from his work responsibilities. Now that he has been charged, his employment has been terminated. We are deeply disturbed by the charges." Babik's duties at UF included being a sideline reporter along with pre- and post-game host in football as well as play-by-play announcer in women's basketball, baseball, hosting the coach's show for women's basketball and feature reporter for both football and men's basketball highlight shows. Babik, 50, joined the Florida staff in 1987. A native of Struthers, Ohio, he is a Penn State graduate. Babik entered a plea of not guilty and was released on $100,000 bond at first appearance on Monday afternoon. His trial has been set for Mar. 1 in Gainesville. _______________________
