STAA client Breslauer calling shots at Rutgers
(January 19, 2010) As a kid, STAA client Danny Breslauer would mute the television and play sportscaster. Today, he’s turning child’s play into a burgeoning career as a sports announcer.

RECRUITED EARLY
“The biggest thrill was calling my first Rutgers basketball game. I’ve followed the Rutgers basketball program since I was 2 years old,” says Danny, a double major in journalism and media studies and psychology. To date, he has called more than 100 games for WRSU 88.7 FM, the Rutgers–New Brunswick radio station.

In high school, Danny announced basketball games and spent summers interning at WCTC 1450 AM, a local radio station. So finding a university that offered the chance to cultivate a career in sports announcing was important. For the Highland Park native, coming to Rutgers was a no-brainer. Great academics? Check. Involved faculty? Check. Big-time college sports? Check. Well-known campus radio? Check. Also, Rutgers has always been a household name in the Breslauer family; Danny’s father, Kenneth Breslauer, is vice president for health science partnerships at the university.

At Rutgers, Danny found the right mix of academics and cocurricular activities. And he credits the faculty of the School of Communication and Information for encouraging him to pursue his passion for sports radio and for providing insight into the workings of the newsroom. With last year’s promotion to general manager at WRSU, Danny is learning the ins and outs of production and programming and how to delegate.

A BALANCING ACT
Despite traveling the East Coast to call Rutgers games for WRSU, Danny has maintained a 3.92 grade-point average and a place in the School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. “I have to tell you right away about [WRSU's] phenomenal sports staff of about 15–20 people. They enable us to call every home and away men’s and women’s basketball game and football games, with select soccer, lacrosse, and baseball at home,” Danny boasts of the station’s student-led sports department.

WHAT’S NEXT
Graduating in May, Danny, who was named one of the top collegiate radio broadcasters in the country by Sportscasters Talent Agency of America, is busier than ever. He’s taking 12 credits this semester, but “it should really be [counted as] 15 credits, since you can add 3 credits for a job search to the course load,” Danny jokes. “I’m going to make sure I am sending out résumés daily. That’s all you can do. You hope someone grabs your tape, listens, and likes it.”
