(January 8, 2010) KOA Radio signed veteran sports broadcaster Jerry Schemmel to team with Jack Corrigan on the Rockies broadcasts, the station said today.

Schemmel, known mostly for his radio coverage of the the Nuggets since 1992, replaces Jeff Kingery, an original Rockies broadcaster, who retired at the end of last season.

Schemmel and Altitude Sports, which broadcasts Nuggets games on KCKK-AM (1510), will part company following the Jan. 25 game against Charlotte.

Jason Kosmicki, who's been broadcasting Nuggets road games, is expected to handle home and road games for the remainder of the season.

"We're delighted to get Jerry," said Lee Larsen, president and marketing manager of Clear Channel Denver. "He's a terrific talent and a fine individual and has the advantage of really knowing the local sports territory."

Larsen added that Schemmel, who signed a multi-year contract, was one of 196 current and past broadcasters who applied for the job.

While known mostly for his Nuggets coverage, Schemmel's varied background includes baseball booth announcing. In 2007, he did play-by-play for the Billings (Mont.) Mustangs, a Cincinnati Reds farm team.

"Like a lot of youngsters I always dreamed about broadcasting major-league games," Schemmel said. "When Jeff retired I told myself 'Here's a chance to maybe fulfill that dream.' "

Schemmel, 50, began broadcasting only Nuggets home games last season.

"I was a bit burned out and tired of traveling," Schemmel said. "But my emotional batteries have been recharged. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to apply for the Rockies job."

This marks the second time Schemmel has succeeded Kingery in a sports broadcasting booth.

In 1992, Schemmel replaced Kingery on KOA as the voice of the Nuggets when Kingery left the booth to prepare for the Rockies job.

Yet to be resolved is how Schemmel will end his association with Colorado State as the voice of the Rams football and basketball network.

"I may have to do a bit of traveling from Tucson during spring training to cover the final games CSU's basketball season," Schemmel said.

Schemmel has given up his Metro State baseball coaching position — a job that whetted his appetite to get more involved in baseball.

"My major challenge in calling Rockies games will be pacing," Schemmel said. "When you're a one-man band in an NBA contest, you talk constantly. Obviously, that's not the broadcasting style in baseball."

The first broadcast for the Corrigan-Schemmel team is April 5.
