Sportscaster Ron Forsell dies
(January 5, 2010) Ron Forsell, an Aberdeen native who became a prominent television newsman and sports anchor in Seattle, died Dec. 24. He was 81.

Forsell spent his retirement years at his home in the Shoreline area north of Seattle and at a summer cabin at Lake Chelan.

A celebration of his life is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 23 at the family home in Shoreline.

Born Nov. 16, 1928, in Aberdeen, he graduated from Aberdeen High School and Washington State University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Radio Speech from WSU in 1950.

After broadcasting Washington State sports as a student, Forsell spent six years as a sportscaster at an Ellensburg radio station before joining KIRO-TV when the station went on the air for the first time in 1958.

He was news director for several years and was named sports director in 1969.

Although Forsell did play-by-play for Seattle University basketball for several years in the 1960s and ’70s and had a brief stint as the play-by-play voice of University of Washington basketball, he was best known as KIRO’s television sports anchor for seven years.

Known for a low-key on-the-air manner and understated sense of humor, he gained his greatest renown when the station began offering computer-based predictions for college and pro football games. When Forsell disagreed with the computer’s selection, he would say, “I don’t like it, reverse it.”

An avid golfer, he also produced and narrated a series on the toughest 18 holes in the Seattle area.

Forsell also broadcast a wide variety of other events, ranging from unlimited hydroplane racing to professional wrestling.

Leaving KIRO in 1976, he wrote and produced an award-winning documentary on Native Americans, “More Than Bows and Arrows,” for Cinema Associates and later wrote and produced promotional films for Boeing.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jan, three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
