Pen's Steigerwald makes questionable crack
(December 23, 2009) Fox Sports Pittsburgh play-by-play man Paul Steigerwald is hearing it from the blogosphere after an off-colour comment during Monday night's game between the Penguins and the visiting New Jersey Devils.

The faux pas occurred when colour man Bob Errey was describing a hit on the Devils' Mike Mottau in the corner late in the game, which knocked the former Boston College player off his feet.

"The Hobey Baker winner went down real hard," Errey says, referring to the U.S. college hockey award for best player, won by Mottau in 2000.

"Not as hard as Hobey Baker went down though," Steigerwald adds. "He went down in a plane crash."

Hobey Baker played for Princeton from 1910 to 1914, leading the school to a pair of national collegiate hockey championships, as well as a national football title.

He enlisted as a pilot in the First World War in 1917, eventually flying with members of the famous Lafayette Escadrille, a squadron comprised of volunteer Americans.

Baker died in December 1918 while testing a repaired aircraft, just before he was to return home from France after the war. He was 26.
