CBS' Davis gives Knight some adviceCourtesy
USA Today
(December 21, 2009) College basketball TV analysts, usually former coaches themselves, are more likely to praise or at least sympathize with coaches who've had NCAA problems rather than call them out.
And it's even rarer for TV analysts to single out other analysts as being out of line. But CBS' Seth Davis Saturday singled out ESPN's Bob Knight as not only not having "his facts correct" in criticizing Kentucky's John Calipari but also for not being "a great messenger to be talking about the behavior of coaches." This could get interesting. Davis was citing Knight — in an off-air fundraiser in Indiana — saying "integrity is really lacking" in college basketball and "that's why I'm glad I'm not coaching." Knight said Calipari "put two schools on probation and he's still coaching. I really don't understand that." Not true, said Davis, who said neither Massachusetts nor Memphis got "probation" — though both were sanctioned for NCAA violations committed during Calipari's tenures — and that Calipari wasn't "implicated." (Calipari, on Knight, said he doesn't "agree" with what he said but remains "a big fan.") But Davis' larger point seemed to be that Knight shouldn't criticize coaches. Or should at least start with himself if he does: "I'd like to see him own up to some of the things he did over the course of his career. Be as tough on Bob Knight as you were this week on John Calipari." At least Davis, who didn't coach or play college hoops, needn't worry about Knight coming back and saying the same to him. _______________________
