Eric Nadel a candidate for Frick Award
(December 1, 2009) Eric Nadel, who is preparing for his 16th season as the lead voice on the Rangers' radio broadcasts, is among the broadcasters who are up for the 2010 Ford C. Frick Award.

The winner will receive the award at the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown on July 25. Online voting for fans began Tuesday at the Hall of Fame's Facebook site, www.facebook.com/baseballhall, and will conclude at 5 p.m. EST on Dec. 31.

The top three fan selections from votes cast at the site during December will appear on the final 10-name ballot for the award. The 2010 Frick Award winner will be selected by a 20-member electorate, with the winner to be announced in early February.

Other broadcasters with Rangers connections who are up for the award include the late Mark Holtz and Merle Harmon, current television broadcasters Josh Lewin and Tom Grieve and long-time Texas-area broadcasters Steve Busby and Norm Hitzges.

Nadel began his career with the Rangers in 1979, working both television and radio. He moved to radio full time in 1982 and became the club's No. 1 broadcaster on radio in 1995 when Holtz moved to television. He is a four-time selection as Texas Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters and a member of the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame. This will be his 32nd year with the Rangers.

Holtz, who passed away in 1997, was voice of the Rangers for 16 years, first on radio and then on television. He was an eight-time Texas Sportscaster of the Year who spent 13 years teaming with Nadel on the radio before moving to television.

Harmon, who passed away on April 15, began his career as a broadcaster in 1949 and later became a broadcaster for the Kansas City Athletics, Milwaukee Braves, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers as well as NBC on the Game of the Week. He was television broadcaster for the Rangers from 1982-89 and was one of the pioneers in the cable broadcasting business.

Grieve is going into his 16th season as the Rangers' color analyst on the television broadcasts. He has been with the Rangers in 42 of his 43 seasons in professional baseball, beginning as a player and a front office executive before going into television.

Lewin will be beginning his ninth season with the Rangers and has also worked for the Orioles, Cubs and Tigers in his 15-year career. He has also been a part of FOX Saturday national baseball coverage since 1996 and broadcast both the American League Division Series and National League Division Series for FOX in 2001 and '02. In '03, he was a dugout reporter during the ALDS and NLCS.

Busby spent 14 years with the Rangers as both an analyst and lead announcer on television from 1982-95. A member of the Royals Hall of Fame, he still remains active with the Rangers as a commentator on FOX Sports Southwest and still does games on radio when needed.

Hitzges was one of the pioneers in the cable broadcasting business while serving as a television analyst for the Rangers and his morning show on The Ticket remains one of the most popular sports talk shows in the market.

Presented annually since 1978 for excellence in baseball broadcasting, the Ford C. Frick Award is given to an active or retired broadcaster with a minimum of 10 years of continuous Major League broadcast service with a ballclub, network, or a combination of the two.

This marks the seventh year the Hall of Fame will include three fan selections on its final Frick Award ballot. In 2009, a record 145,138 votes were cast online, with former Cincinnati Reds announcer Joe Nuxhall leading all vote-getters with 19,547. Ultimately, former NBC Game of the Week broadcaster Tony Kubek won the award.
