Mediocre Packers draw TV ratingsCourtesy
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
(November 19, 2009) For a team that is 5-4, one whose chances for a division title appear to be out of reach, some of Green Bay's games this season have generated huge national television audiences.
Of course there is a Favre Factor here - Brett Favre's presence on the Minnesota Vikings fueled interest in the two Packers-Vikings games, which were played in the first half of the season on a national stage. But Favre didn't play in last Sunday's Dallas Cowboys at Packers game on Fox, which went to most of the country, and there was a bigger national audience for that game than for the much anticipated prime-time game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts on NBC-TV. Through 10 weeks of the National Football League season, the Packers have been involved in four games, either alone or as the main game in a regional package, that have attracted at least 21 million viewers each. Here's that list: • Chicago Bears at Packers on Sept. 13 on NBC's "Sunday Night Football" - 21.5 million viewers, with a rating that was the best for NBC since 2006 when Peyton and Eli Manning played against one another in a Colts-New York Giants game. • Packers at Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 5 on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" - 21.8 million viewers, the most-watched telecast in cable TV history. • Vikings at Packers on Nov. 1 in Fox's national game - 29.8 million viewers, the second most-watched game on Fox since a 49ers-Cowboys game in 1995, which had 32.1 million viewers. • Cowboys at Packers on Nov. 15 in Fox's national game - 26.7 million viewers, a 19% bigger audience than watched Patriots-Colts later that same night, which had 22.4 million viewers. Unless they are flexed into the "Sunday Night Football" schedule, the Packers are to play in two more national games - Thanksgiving Day at the Detroit Lions on Fox and on Dec. 7 against the visiting Baltimore Ravens on ESPN's "Monday Night Football." _______________________
