(November 18, 2009) Mike Capps, director of broadcasting for the Round Rock Express, was named 2009 Broadcaster of the Year by BallparkDigest.com Tuesday. The 2010 season will be Capps' 11th season as the play-by-play voice of the Express.

This is another in a long line of broadcasting honors for Capps, who was named Minor League Broadcaster of the Year by Minor League News in 2006. Capps, who has been with the Express since the organization's first day, was the lead announcer for the 2009 Triple-A Baseball National Championship on ESPN2.

"Mike Capps is truly a baseball institution behind the mike," BallparkDigest.com publisher Kevin Reichard said. "His gravelly voice makes an instant connection with listeners, and his descriptions of what happens at the ballpark - both inside and outside the lines - resonate with fans and help make the Express one of the most popular minor-league franchises in the country."

Capps carries with him nearly 30 years of broadcasting experience. Prior to his time with the Express, Capps worked with various news outlets, including a stint as sports director of WFAA-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth. He also worked for CNN, during which time he covered the first Gulf War. Capps also joined legendary scout Red Murff, who discovered Nolan Ryan, to write "The Scout: Searching for the Best in Baseball."

"From the depths of my heart, I owe a handful of people nothing but thanks for believing the transition from news to baseball was the correct move," Capps said. "This award amplifies their love and belief in me. The recognition from true baseball fans and true fans of the baseball broadcasting craft is most humbling."

Capps also serves on the Goodwill Central Texas Board of Directors and is active with their GED program. He also is a member of the Rotary Club of Austin and has chaired the organization's newsletter committee. Capps earned an Emmy nomination and a Cable Ace Award for his coverage of the 1993 Waco Siege.

Express President Jay Miller echoed Ryan's compliments and praise.

When we're up five or down five, you can't tell a difference; you can't teach that. Mike's energy and enthusiasm is unmatched. Furthermore, he is loved by our fans. It's great to see fans in the stands with radios, listening to the game; that's when you know you have the right guy."
