(November 16, 2009) KKTV 11 News announced Friday Jesse Kurtz will be taking over for John Owens as Sports Director. Owens announced last week he is stepping down next month after nearly 3 decades behind the sports desk.

"In the 7 years I have known Jesse, he lives, breathes, sports. That’s the kind of guy you need in that position,” said Owens.

Kurtz has been a weekend sports anchor and sports reporter at the station since 2002. In that time, he's won four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Sports Reporting, and has been named Sportscaster of the Year by the Colorado Broadcasters Association three times.

In addition to his duties at KKTV 11 News, Kurtz worked as an NFL Sideline Reporter and Pre-Game Host during the 2009 Broncos pre-season.

"I'm honored to be the next sports director at KKTV, knowing that the job comes with the great responsibility of following a local legend, and my friend, John Owens," said Kurtz.

Kurz will take over the Sports Director role after Owens' last regular night on the air December 11th. Owens and station management have said Owens will still be part of the 11 Sports department, and will still be on the air from time to time.

"In sports, it's said you never want to be the guy who replaces 'the' guy," said Kurtz, "But I will work hard to continue the tradition of excellence that John has built."
