Sportscasters Hall at Dogertown?
(November 16, 2009) Imagine an attraction where you could sit next to video images of Lindsey Nelson and Curt Gowdy, then help them call an inning of the 1969 World Series between the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles? Then get a video copy of the package?

Given today’s technology, it’s just about possible.

Now imagine listening to or watching snippets of any of the great athletic contests since the advent of broadcasting. How about perusing sportscasting exhibits, from Nelson’s multicolored sport coats to some of Vin Scully’s correspondence with Walter O’Malley? And imagine being able to do it in Vero Beach. At Dodgertown.

My imagination started running wild several weeks ago after getting a call from Lou Schwartz, president of the American Sportscasters Association. He’d read columns Ray McNulty and I had written about giving Vin Scully a big sendoff, including something at Dodgertown, when he finally retires as broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The last time I spoke with Schwartz was about 15 years ago, when the association was looking for a site for a hall of fame. And Indian River County had an old courthouse it had no use for.

The association’s hall of fame has been looking for a home since 2000, when it was booted out of the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., after only two years. MCI needed space for offices, the association said. Unfortunately, the association, based in New York and whose chairman is listed as Dick Enberg, has limited funds.

Dodgertown would be a great spot for a sports museum, but it would take millions, probably tens of millions, of dollars to pull something like this off. As always, the bottom line — an investor’s return on the investment — would be the key to making this work.

Craig Callan, vice president of Minor League Baseball at Dodgertown, must get a lot of big ideas pitched to him by folks who are undercapitalized. A sportscasters hall of fame — which already includes folks like Jim McKay, Marty Glickman, Jack Brickhouse and Red Barber — would be another, unless someone with deep pockets wants to make an investment.
