Homicide charges dropped against FinnertyCourtesy
Boston Herald
(November 6, 2009) A motor vehicle homicide charge has been dismissed against a former WEEI on-air sports news reader who struck and killed a Cambridge teenager while driving drunk last November.
Robert Finnerty, 27, was supposed to be the designated driver and was heading home from Game On! in Kenmore Square when authorities say he hit 19-year-old Michael Riley on Soldiers Field Road. Finnerty, a former Metro Networks employee who did sports news updates, called “flashes,” for WEEI-AM (850), pleaded guilty to operating under the influence last week at Brighton District Court. “The past year has been exceptionally traumatic and difficult for all parties involved,” Finnerty said yesterday. “My thoughts and prayers are with the Riley family as we all try to move forward through this tragedy.” The motor vehicle homicide charge was dismissed when a collision analysis report showed there was no way any driver - impaired or sober - could have avoided striking Riley as he stepped into the street, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley. Finnerty, who had his driver’s license yanked for three years, was also sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to undergo random urine screens and 1,000 hours of community service. The victim’s family could not be reached. _______________________
