Crowd inspires Thunder's Matt PintoCourtesy
The Oklahoman
(October 23, 2009) Radio play-by-play voice Matt Pinto is looking forward to his second season of covering the Oklahoma City Thunder, especially home games at the boisterous Ford Center.
"It makes my job incredibly enjoyable when I’m seated behind the official scorer’s table and at times have difficulty hearing myself speak,” he said. "It’s exactly what you want. It’s as loud a building as there is in the NBA, if not the loudest.” Pinto, 47, should know. Entering his 20th season as an NBA broadcaster, the Boston native has been all around the league in stints with the Charlotte Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, L.A. Clippers and Seattle SuperSonics. His descriptive call paints a vivid picture of the game action. "I love broadcasting,” he said. "I’m hopeful that comes across. I’m always working to hone the skill set that it takes to be as quick and as descriptive as the NBA mandates to do justice to the great athletes that are out there doing their thing.” Pinto is hoping he’ll have more opportunities this season for his trademark call — "Cha-ching, that’s a Thunder money ball!” To do so, the Thunder will need to hit more 3-point shots this season. Last season the team had the fewest 3-point attempts and was third-worst in 3-point baskets in the league. Pinto said the young Thunder team has been fun to cover. "I love the fact that the team spent as much time together as it seemed to during the summer months,” he said. "I think that speaks well of their camaraderie and their commitment to what this season could be all about. Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Russell Westbrook and now (James) Harden, that’s a really solid core of 23 and younger players.” "This group is definitely going to grow together, step by step, game by game. To me, from what I’ve experienced around the league, this is the way championship teams are constructed.” Besides his broadcast duties, Pinto and his wife, Becky, are also busy taking care of their son, Nash, who will celebrate his first birthday Nov. 11. And yes, Pinto said, the naming of his son was influenced by Phoenix Suns guard Steve Nash. _______________________
