Volunteer brings passion to sportscasting
(October 14, 2009) How many people do you know would travel two and a half hours a week for 13 years to work for free?

Probably not many.

But that's exactly what CPHS Channel 6 broadcaster Derek Wark has done for more than a decade.

Wark, who is originally from Sarnia and works in Tiverton, Ontario, has been the play-by-play announcer for Port Huron High and Port Huron Northern for much of his adult life.

Wark, 33, has always been a big-time sports enthusiast, and it clearly shows every time he steps behind the microphone at Memorial Stadium to call a Big Reds or Huskies football game.

"I feel my job as a Channel 6 announcer is to get these kids noticed in some way more than they get already because they certainly deserve it," said Wark, who is known on-air as "Big D."

"I try to be extra exciting on the mic to make that happen. The standout players are what make my job the most enjoyable, because that's when I have the most fun in the booth."

Wark said he has always been interested in the sports scene in the United States, especially Port Huron sports.

"I have also called play-by-play for some Sarnia Imperials football games, but I am amazed at the difference in football talent between the two cities," Wark said.

"(Macomb Area Conference) high school football far exceeds anything Sarnia has and the Port Huron teams spend far more money, and it's noticeable on the field with far more talent, fans, a tremendous stadium in Memorial field and it blows me away. In Canada, you get a couple hundred fans. In Port Huron you get a couple thousand. That's the difference."

Wark enjoys providing play-by-play so much that he travels every Friday from Tiverton, where he works as a millwright.

It turns out, broadcasting was just in his blood.

"I used to follow people around my house trying to interview them," he said.

"Sports is my passion. It's my life. I used to play in Canada, but it means nothing there. In Port Huron you have passionate fans and passionate games. Who wouldn't like that?"

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of joining former Port Huron High football Coach Eddie Kindle in the press box next to Wark at Memorial Stadium for the WHLS broadcast of the Big Reds win over Sterling Heights.

It was an exciting and enjoyable experience for both Kindle and me.

After not being involved with broadcasting since college, it was a great experience to remind me of why I enjoyed it so much and also how challenging it is.

Announcing is often a faceless job, but because of the contributions of Wark and other radio and television broadcasters in the area, Port Huron sports continue to thrive.
