Sportscaster Joe DiNiro out at KFNS
(October 9, 2009) Joe DeNiro has been fired by KFNS, the first on-air move since station general manager Dave Greene and James Oelklaus entered into an agreement to lease the station from Atlanta-based Big League Broadcasting, with the intention to eventually buy it.

DeNiro was co-host of the afternoon drive-time show, with Bob Fescoe and Jay Randolph Jr. He was best known for his comical, believable and well-crafted impersonations of the Cardinals' Albert Pujols.

"It was simply a business decision,'' Greene said. "For the time being, we didn't feel it made the best business sense to have three people on our afternoon show.''

Four behind-the-scenes people also were terminated.

Greene said DeNiro might continue doing commercials and personal appearances for KFNS.

"He's a creative guy, he's talented,'' Greene said.

Meanwhile, Ken "Iggy'' Strode, who has worked at KFNS multiple times as well as at other stations, has been brought back to produce the morning show and book guests for the afternoon drive-time program. Strode, who has an extensive contact list of big names inside and outside sports, also hosts a bowling show on Tuesday nights and a sports-medicine program on Thursdays.

In another tweak, the 2-3 p.m. lineup is being adjusted. The Blues' David Backes is on with Andy Strickland on Mondays, poker with Dennis Phillips and Paul Harris airs Tuesdays, baseball with Rick Hummel and Jay Randolph Sr. is on Wednesdays, the sports-medicine show airs Thursdays and football with Howard Balzer appears Fridays.
