Odd miscalls by TBS' Chip Caray

(October 9, 2009) Fair or not, one call can haunt — or boost — a broadcaster. Al Michaels always will be known for "Do you believe in miracles, yes!" for the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey victory over the Soviet Union.

For TBS' Chip Caray it's become a "show me" world.

During the Minnesota-Detroit tiebreaker on Tuesday, Caray called a drive by Minnesota's Nick Punto a "base hit" when it was a line-out to left field that became a double play when Alexi Casilla was thrown out at home.

This was heard from Caray during Wednesday's Twins-New York Yankees American League Division Series game: "A quality at-bat for (Minnesota shortstop) Orlando Cabrera."

But Cabrera struck out with two men on, his team down 6-2 to end the top of the seventh inning and batting champion Joe Mauer on deck.

Despite the miscalls, TBS is sticking with Caray.

"I can tell you we're not going to make a change," said spokesman Jeff Pomeroy, adding that Caray will call the National League Championship Series. Caray and partner Ron Darling had Thursday off before the Yankees entertain the Twins for Game 2 tonight (6:07 p.m. ET).
