Ed McCaffrey impresses on Broncos radio

(September 14, 2009) Lee Larsen, head of Clear Channel's eight-station Denver radio empire, should make an executive decision this morning: Sign Ed McCaffrey as Dave Logan's full-time KOA booth partner for the rest of the Broncos' season.

The former Denver wide receiver, who has wide experience in local broadcasting (mostly promoting his "healthy feet" service), got his radio feet wet Sunday in winning style as a color analyst.

Larsen, in midsummer, said KOA would feature a variety of talent — in-house and guests — in the booth with Logan.

The announced reason: David Diaz-Infante, Logan's regular partner, would be too expensive as a freelancer in this down economy.

I don't regularly turn down the CBS guys when watching the Broncos.

While Gus Johnson and Dan Fouts were adequate on TV, they were trying too hard to turn a lemon into lemonade.

I wanted a local perspective during the second half of the feeble Broncos-Bengals contest that certainly was not going to be honored as the NFL Game of the Week.

I discovered that Logan and McCaffrey worked as though they had been together for several seasons.

With a little more than six minutes remaining, Kyle Orton was sacked — a play that ended a promising Broncos drive and took them out of field-goal position.

McCaffrey quickly noted, "He should have thrown it away."

This was one of several examples of McCaffrey deftly examining the numerous offensive deficiencies.

Logan rarely loses his broadcasting finesse even when the Broncos score. ("That's a Denver touchdown!")

But he and McCaffrey understandably lost their cool ("Are you kidding me?!" and "Oh, my goodness!") when Brandon Stokley scored on the tipped pass to win the game.

While I don't have access to Clear Channel's profit-and-loss sheet, signing McCaffrey should be a no-brainer.

Perhaps a deal could be worked out whereby Clear Channel employees with feet-and-leg problems would patronize McCaffrey's clinics.

Whatever.

McCaffrey should be in the KOA booth the rest of the season.
