Norm Jones out at Avs sports broadcaster

(August 21, 2009) In an apparent cost-cutting move, Altitude Sports and Entertainment announced Thursday that longtime Avalanche radio play-by-play man Norm Jones will no longer continue in that role.

Former radio color analyst Marc Moser will take on Jones' play-by-play duties for all home and road games. Jones will stay with Altitude as a studio host and reporter. He will not travel with the team, as he has done since the team's inception in 1995.

Moser will be the lone person in the radio booth for games, serving as a "play-by-play analyst."

Altitude will broadcast all 82 Avs games on radio, as well as 79 games on television — all, for the first time, in high definition. Mike Haynes and Peter McNab will return to their chairs in the TV booth, with Brian Engblom and former Avs player Mark Rycroft serving as studio analysts.

Jones has been a fixture in Colorado hockey broadcasting, a stint that included several years as play-by-play man of the NHL's Colorado Rockies. He was the voice of the University of Denver for many years and was also the voice of the old Denver Zephyrs minor-league baseball team, as well as other area jobs.

Efforts to reach Jones and Altitude CEO of broadcasting Matt Hutchings were unsuccessful. There have been other staff reductions at Kroenke Sports Enterprises over the summer to trim costs.
