Sportscaster Ryan staying at Ch.2 after allCourtesy
New York Daily News
(August 19, 2009) Sam Ryan isn't leaving WCBS/Ch. 2 after all.Just days after reaching an agreement to leave Ch. 2 and work only for CBS Sports, the popular sportscaster is on the verge of a new agreement to do both. "WCBS threw up a buzzer-beater as the shot clock was expiring," Ryan told the Daily News Tuesday. Though the deal is still being hammered out, Ryan said they've created an "unorthodox schedule" that will allow her to work three days a week at Ch. 2, and Saturday and Sunday for CBS Sports. Otis Livingston, currently doing weekends, will pick up the other four days of the week. Ryan joined Ch. 2 in 2006 as a weekend sportscaster and a part-timer for CBS Sports. Through staffing changes at Ch. 2 - Ch. 2 cut Ducis Rodgers and John Discepolo in January, and later Steve Bartelstein exited - she'd become the main sportscaster for the station in addition to the CBS Sports work. Ryan told the Daily News last week that she simply needed more time to spend with her two children, son Nicklaus, 7, and daughter Jensen, 4. She credits Ch. 2 executive sports producer Chris Scaglione with proposing the new hybrid local-national setup. "I thought, genius," Ryan said of Scaglione's idea. "Why doesn't anyone else think of this? I didn't think this was an option. It's not your typical shift, the typical anchor shift." Ryan said the idea sounded too good to be true. "I just didn't want to work full time," Ryan said. "My kids are at the ages where you can't really explain to them why you have to work. You try to tell them, and, God, it breaks your heart." Going into last weekend, Ryan had planned on leaving Ch. 2 Aug. 27 and just focusing on hosting a college football show Saturdays on the CBS College Sports network and working on CBS' "NFL Today" on Sundays. She said Tuesday the exact scheduling of her days at Ch. 2 still needed to be hashed out. _______________________
