Everblades hockey finds new radio homeCourtesy
Fort Myers News-Press
(August 14, 2009) The Florida Everblades are ending their 10-year affiliation with Sports Radio 770 ESPN (WWCN-AM).
The Blades' new flagship station will be The New Fox Sports Radio 1200 Sports Now (WPTK). "Beasley Broadcasting has some other commitments, which would've reduced the number of games we can have (on the air)," Blades president/general manager Craig Brush said. "It was more than what was acceptable. "Fox is very interested in being involved. It's a better commitment. We'll have over 60 games, for sure." Brush added that Fox Radio's signal is stronger than that of 770. Beasley Broadcasting market manager Brad Beasley said, "We've had a great time covering them from their inaugural season. I wish them the best." Fox Radio also carries FSU, South Florida and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so those teams will conflict at times with the Blades. "There always are going to be conflicts," Brush said. "Generally speaking, I think it'll work out well. "A lot of the football games will be over before we start, or a few that will be joined in progress." John Curtis will do the ECHL team's play-by-play, but the Blades will look for another color commentator for home games with Ken Schinkel retiring. Beasley said 770 is exploring different options this fall. The plan is to air all Florida Gator football games, NASCAR, college and pro football on Westwood One and the Major League Baseball playoffs. "We're looking at the possibility of covering area high school games, pregame and postgame," Beasley said. When asked if the station would cover more FGCU contests, he said, "That's a possibility." Fox 1200 program director Chad Rufer didn't return calls to The News-Press on Thursday. WINK sports director Clayton Ferraro, co-host of Fox's sports talk show "The Red Zone," said he wasn't aware of the change. _______________________
