Major changes for U. of Arizona sportscastsCourtesy

(August 13, 2009) Arizona Wildcats fans nationwide will have a chance to watch the team on its new network — but will find some new faces when they do.The Arizona Wildcats Sports Network announced a new stable of broadcasters Wednesday, moving former UA players into football and basketball roles on the month-old enterprise. Gone is Bob Elliott, the former UA great who had provided color commentary for Fox Sports Arizona basketball games for 10 seasons. So is radio color commentator Ryan Hansen, who will focus on his UA athletic department fundraising job. Two former Wildcats basketball players will replace them — Corey Williams on television and Matt Muehlebach on radio. Williams played from 1992 to 1996; Muehlebach from 1988 to 1991. John Fina, an 11-year NFL veteran, will provide television color commentary for football games. Fina, a Tucson native who played at the UA from 1987 to 1991, will be joined by sideline reporter Glenn Howell, another UA alum. Dana Cooper, who works for UA sports marketing arm IMG College, will do football sideline reports on the radio. Play-by-play stalwarts Brian Jeffries and Dave Sitton will remain in those roles for radio and television, respectively, for both sports. "We took a very objective look at this," AWSN executive producer Brent Seebohm said. "With all respect to the Fox Sports Arizona years and the broadcast talent from those years, we wanted to make sure that for the university, inside the state of Arizona and beyond … we wanted to select the highest-caliber broadcaster. And we did." The contracts are year-to-year, Seebohm said. The announcers are paid contractors. AWSN announced a partnership that will make many of its games available to out-of-state fans with a satellite dish or sports cable package. Games will air on Comcast SportsNet, Cox Channel 4 in San Diego and on Altitude Sports and Entertainment, a network that encompasses 10 Rocky Mountain states. The network will publish which channel will air the games for out-of-state viewers. For a fee, games also can be watched at www.arizonawildcats.com. AWSN, which was unveiled last month, will air games on KGUN (Channel 9) and KWBA (Channel 58) in Southern Arizona, in addition to KWBA's Spanish language affiliate, LATV, which is available on Cox Channel 88, Comcast Channel 205 and digital over-the-air Channel 58-2. Fans statewide also can watch the UA on KAZT-TV, which is available on Cox Channel 7. In general, games — starting with the Sept. 5 football opener — will be aired live on KWBA and tape-delayed on KGUN. Fina and others auditioned for the job last week, watching muted games on television. "You're turning on a taped game with no sound and generating excitement and generating feeling," Fina said. "You're getting your football brain back on." Hansen, a former manager and director of basketball operations, first started calling road basketball games in the 1997-98 season and took on the full schedule in the 2004-05 year. Hansen said that athletic director "Jim Livengood felt like we needed all hands on deck from a fundraising standpoint." Messages left for Elliott, Muehlebach and Williams were not immediately returned Wednesday night. Sitton, who first met Elliott when they lived in the same dormitory as freshmen, called his former partner "a terrific broadcaster and one of the all-time great sports personalities in the history of the school." Did you know? The Arizona Wildcats Sports Network will air UA football and men's basketball games on KGUN (Ch 9) and KWBA (Ch 58) in Southern Arizona, in addition to KWBA's Spanish language affiliate, LATV, which is available on cable and Ch 58-2. Fans statewide also can watch the UA on KAZT-TV, which is available on Cox Channel 7. In general, live events will air on KWBA first, then on KGUN on tape delay. _______________________
