San Diego station shines after big trade
(August 7, 2009) On a day when the Padres traded ace pitcher Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox, XX Sports 1090 had one of its finest days.

Minutes after the 1 p.m. trade was announced, Barry Axelrod, Peavy's Encinitas-based agent, was on the phone with 1090's Darren Smith.

A few moments later, Peavy was on the line with Smith.

"Barry Axelrod is a local guy, a guy who gets it and a guy we have a relationship with," Smith said. "Jake is a guy I've been able to build a relationship with over the last six years.

"So we got a little lucky."

Luck, however, is the residue of hard work.

Smith and producer Marty Caswell have worked hard to establish relationships with athletes around town.

Axelrod is one of the classiest agents in the business, a man who tries to return every call. He didn't have to return Smith's call as promptly as he did, but that's Axelrod, who also promptly returned calls from all the local beat writers.

Officials at 1090, however, weren't content to rest on two timely and compelling interviews.

So the station went live from Petco Park with press conferences with Peavy, then Padres general manager Kevin Towers and manager Bud Black. Good stuff.

The only problem was that 1090 had to blow off a scheduled interview with former Padres closer Trevor Hoffman, who was in town for the first time as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.

"I felt terrible about that," said Smith. "But there was just so much going on that day."

No need to apologize because it was a great day for the 1090 crew.

Meanwhile, ESPN 800 in San Diego ---- with only one local employee ---- was in national programming.

And XTRA Sports 1360 was in the middle of its L.A. segment with Steve Hartman and Chris Meyers.

The only San Diego-based show on 1360 ---- Josh Rosenberg and Jeff Dotseth ---- didn't hit the air until 3 p.m. when it was live from Chargers Park.

Rosenberg and Dotseth work weekdays from 3-7 p.m. with the final segment, from 6-7 p.m., touted as the "Chargers Power Hour." The station tried to rally last Friday, going to Channel 4's Jenny Cavnar for a Padres update and checking in with MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian ---- the former voice of the Padres on Channel 4.

Later, Rosenberg and Dotseth played an interview with Hoffman that had been taped earlier in the day.

Brian Wilson, program director at 1360, said he was stuck between a rock and a hard place when the Peavy trade was going down. Not only was it the major-league trading deadline, but it was the opening day of Chargers training camp. And 1360 is the Chargers' flagship station.

"We want to be current and live, and I'm doing everything in my power to do that," Wilson said. "But right now, when there is breaking news, we're out of luck.

"We just can't crack open a microphone and put someone on the air because we don't have a ton of guys in the building."

Part of the problem at 1360 is that it carries the Steve Czaban Show live from 3-6 a.m., then tape delayed from 9 a.m.-noon.

And while the Czaban Show is good, it's not good enough to run twice.

"I really want to get a second local show on our air," Wilson said. "I'm committed to finding a way to get it done. Last Friday was a rough day. The Padres are an important part of sports in this town. But we're the Chargers station, so we have to pick and choose."
