Sportscaster Kalas to be honoredCourtesy
CBS 3
(August 7, 2009) Philadelphia sports fans are taking a moment to honor the lives of two local legends.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas will take his place alongside Phillies legends on the "Wall of Fame" at Citizens Bank Park Friday. The unmistakable voice of the Phillies has been sorely missed since his sudden death in April at the age of 73. Kalas' posthumous honor will be a fitting start to Phillies Alumni Weekend, as past Wall of Fame honorees Steve Carlton, Garry Maddox, Mike Schmidt and others will join the celebration. "He is the first non-player to be inducted into this, it's just such an honor," Kalas' youngest son Kane said. Kane, along with his brothers Todd and Brad will take part in the ceremony. The Eagles will also be remembering one of their own during a private memorial service Friday afternoon. Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson lost his battle with melanoma on July 28. Family and friends will honor his life during a service at Lincoln Financial Field. "First and foremost he was a good person and an excellent father, husband, grandfather," said current Eagles Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott. Training camp will be put on hiatus for the day as players and coaches head back to Philadelphia from Bethlehem to remember Johnson. _______________________
