MTSU sports find new radio home
(August 3, 2009) Middle Tennessee State University didn't take long to find a new radio home for its athletics program.

Two days after the Blue Raiders' flagship station, WNFN-FM 106.7 The Fan, dropped its all-sports programming format, MTSU officials announced Friday that they had moved to WNSR-AM 560 — the new home for MTSU football and men's basketball in the Nashville area.

WNFN had been MTSU's Nashville flagship since July 2006, but it dropped its ESPN programming earlier this week and debuted a Top-40 music format Friday as i106.

"We had a good run with WNFN, and we appreciate the partnership," MTSU Athletics Director Chris Massaro said.

"We are very fortunate to have WNSR come forward and put together a proposal that will keep giving Blue Raider fans a consistent home in Nashville for our football and men's basketball games."

along with the weekly radio shows for (football) Coach (Rick) Stockstill and (men's basketball) Coach (Kermit) Davis. We look forward to working with general manager Jeff Kolb and his staff."

WNSR's programming is also simulcast on WNTC-FM 103.9 in Bowling Green, Ky. The Blue Raider Network will also be carried on the 100,000-watt station WMOT-FM 89.5 and WGNS 1450-AM, as well as 100.5-FM and 101.9-FM in Murfreesboro. Those additional stations will air all MTSU women's basketball games and the Coach Rick Insell Show, along with the football and men's basketball programming.

MTSU football pregame and postgame shows also will be carried on WNSR-AM, WMOT-FM, WNTC-FM and WGNS.

Massaro announced the move to 560 on the Thom Abraham Show on WNSR Friday afternoon. He said WNSR's local sports talk shows served as a major factor in the move to a new flagship.

Newly-hired MTSU director of broadcasting Chip Walters agreed.

"WNSR has strong local talk shows that will give us an opportunity to promote our programs even more," Walters said. "Having a station with strong local ties that is willing to cross promote is important to the growth of our overall athletic program. WNSR provides nine hours of local programming daily, and it is a benefit to have local sports talk hosts commenting on your product.

"WNSR has The Morning Sports Page (with The Daily News Journal executive sports editor Greg Pogue and David Coleman), The Thom Abraham Show and The Afternoon Pressbox (with Bill King and Tennessean columnist Joe Biddle)."
