AHL sportscaster Michael lands NHL gigCourtesy
Cleveland Plain Dealer
(August 3, 2009) John Michael, radio and TV play-by-play voice of the Lake Erie Monsters in their first two AHL seasons, is moving on to Columbus. Michael has been hired by Fox Sports Ohio to host home postgame shows, and do rinkside reporting and conduct interviews all season, for Columbus Blue Jackets games.
"I'm thrilled to be heading to one of the up-and-coming franchises in the National Hockey League," said Michael, who turned 37 today. "It's well-known throughout the league that Columbus is a classy organization, on and off the ice." Michael quickly became one of the most popular figures in the Monsters organization because of his play-by-play ability, personality and brains. He earned three degrees from Notre Dame: mechanical engineering, law and MBA. Players enjoyed talking with him on long bus rides and watching him whip through newspaper crossword puzzles. Players and then-coach Joe Sacco said it was only a matter of time before Michael worked in the NHL. "I can't say enough about the Cavaliers and Monsters organization," Michael said. "Any time you get a chance to work for a Dan Gilbert-owned franchise, you know it's going to be first-rate from top to bottom. That's exactly how it was and how I was treated in my two seasons with the team." Michael was a full-time practicing trial attorney at the largest law firm in Pittsburgh before leaving in 2003 to pursue a broadcasting career. His first gig was as a radio broadcaster of the Hagerstown (Md.) Suns, at the time an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in 2003.
