Shakeup at Team 1260 Sports RadioCourtesy
Toronto Globe & Mail
(July 31, 2009) There's been a shakeup at Edmonton's Team 1260 all-sports radio. Sports director and morning show host Bryn Griffiths and his co-host, Jake Daniels, are out, while Dustin Nielson (of Hockey's Future Radio) and Kyle Chase - brother of ex-NHLer Kelly Chase - are in as a morning team. Daniels was let go six weeks ago and Griffiths got the word this week.
"After 7½ years, all the fun and all that sweat equity, I'm leaving with my head high," Griffiths told Usual Suspects this week. "The only thing that would make me mad is if they screw up the base we've built. It was tough having no broadcast rights, because 82 nights a year you go up against the Oilers [on CHED 630] with ESPN or FOX radio. This spring was tough, too, with no hot topic around the Oilers to grab listeners. But I'm proud of what we did here." We'll have more on morning sports radio in a future column, but it appears that Team 1260 is grappling with the balance of how much sports and how much other "guy stuff" a program can offer on an all-sports station. Adding Nielson and Chase seems like a move to more sports content in Edmonton. Calgary's Mike Richards has found a niche on the FAN 960 with an irreverent, profane mix of sports and comedy, taking his show from ninth to as high as third in the 18-54 male demographic. Other markets - not so much. But with budgets getting the boa constrictor heading into another NHL season, expect station owners to copy anything that works and is cost efficient. _______________________
