The former ESPN stalwart who left two years ago to go on his own with a nationally syndicated radio show will have that program picked up by DirecTV satellite beginning Monday.

The TV presentation will be much more than a mere simulcast of the radio program — as ESPN does with some of its shows.

"I did not want to do that, I don’t find that interesting," Patrick said in a telephone interview. "I want you to see it, I want you to hear it, but I also want you to get a sense of what it must be like" in the studio, which will have a keg of beer on hand and look more like a rathskeller than a traditional set.

When commercials air on radio, the TV cameras will be showing what transpires as the host interacts with production staff. Cast members also will go to a "confessional booth" occasionally to review the progress of that day’s show as well as other topics.

"This still is a radio show of record in my view," he said. "We get the best guest list. I don’t have any boss, I can talk about whatever I want."

Moving the show to DirecTV is the next evolution for Patrick, who was one of ESPN’s biggest stars when he departed.

"I made (the move) for the right reasons, I told my wife I was just coming home," he said. "I missed out on 15 years with my children. They were born during my career at ESPN. My oldest is 17. I worked second shift for 15 years."

He has stayed in the limelight with the radio show, contributions to Sports Illustrated and his presence on the NFL studio show at NBC. He’ll also be on NBC’s Olympics coverage.

"I still have a good relations with ESPN," he said. "They use clips from my show all the time.

"I did make the right decision, because I made it for the right reason."
