(July 30, 2009) Troy radio broadcasts are reaching new heights this season.
The ISP Sports Network recently announced its radio affiliates for the season, and 10 stations will be covering every game this fall. Dothan listeners can tune in to AM-560, while people in Troy can hear it on the flagship station, WTBF-FM 94.7. “There have been as many as 19 radio affiliates in the past, but this is the largest number of stations that have committed to carry every game,” play-by-play broadcaster Barry McKnight said. “It’s also — by a significant margin — the largest football radio network in the Sun Belt Conference.” That’s not the only change. McKnight, color commentator Jerry Miller, sideline reporter Chris Blackshear and studio producer Mike Mote had been pushing for more time in the pregame broadcast and they got it. The pregame show will start two hours before kickoff instead of one. That means that on Saturday, Sept. 12, when Troy plays at Florida, viewers in the Wiregrass can wake up early for the 9 a.m. pregame show start. When new ISP general manager Eric Williamson came on board in the spring, he pushed for the extension. Williamson has been at Troy for three years, previously working in event management and promotions. “He was definitive from the start,” McKnight said. “He wanted to do it, he pushed it with ISP, and got it approved. Our crew wanted it, and Eric made it happen.” McKnight said that, with the extra hour, the crew will set up at home games at the Trojan Terrace, interacting with fans, analyzing matchups in greater detail and bringing in live guests, including former Trojan greats. They will broadcast the first hour on Trojan Terrace, then hurry up to the press box for the second hour. “The Troy fan will have a greater presence on the pregame show and, hopefully, the pregame show will have a better presence with the Troy fan,” McKnight said. During road games, the crew will set up in the press box, but the goal is to have a drop-in cell-phone visit to the alumni tent to incorporate the fan flavor. The only drawback is that, as McKnight understands it, the first hour will be just on the flagship station 94.7 FM and on the Internet Trojan Talk will be on Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m. this year at Yanni’s Tavern in Troy, but the first Trojan Talk will be on Monday, Aug. 24.
