(July 29, 2009) Longtime Oregon-based broadcaster Darrell Aune is the new voice of Western Oregon football.
Aune, 67, will take over the broadcasts of Wolves' home games starting this fall. Aune, known mostly for his work broadcasting Oregon State and Linfield sports, will share the booth with color analyst Bear Blunck for home games at McArthur Field. The Bear and his son, associate athletic director Russ Blunck, will handle the road games. This will be the 13th year the Bluncks have worked WOU football. "I couldn't be happier joining Western's team," Aune said. "I have now achieved the elder broadcaster's dream: all home games and no travel. "It will be a pleasure to work with longtime friend and broadcaster Russ Blunck, athletic director Jon Carey and all of WOU's outstanding athletes and coaches." The move also puts Aune much closer to home. Aune and his wife, Catherine, a mathematics professor at Western Oregon, have been Monmouth residents for 10 years. Aune, a 1966 graduate of Washington State, started his career at KWSU in Pullman. After four years in Pueblo, Colo., he moved to Oregon State, where he worked from 1970-99. For 20 of those years with the Beavers, Aune was sports director of KEX (1190 AM) in Portland. From 2000-08, Aune was the voice of Linfield College football. He also worked Linfield basketball and University of Portland basketball during that time. "I am thrilled to have Darrell's familiar voice represent Western Oregon athletics," Russ Blunck said. "He is one of the most respected broadcasters to ever call a game in this state, and this is a significant upgrade for us." Western Oregon also has a new flagship station, KLOO (1340 AM) in Corvallis. KLOO is part of a five-station group in the Albany-Corvallis area that includes KLOO (106.3 FM), KRKT (99.9 FM), KEJO (1240 AM) and KTHH (990 AM). "Being part of a five-station network will provide us with a lot more opportunities to cross-promote and give us wider exposure," said Russ Blunck, who added that the Wolves no longer will be affiliated with KPJC (1220 AM) in Salem. _______________________
