Sportscaster Merloni picks WEEICourtesy
Boston Herald
(July 28, 2009) Boston sports radio newcomer WBZ-FM made a fierce bid for WEEI regular Lou Merloni, but the former Red Sox [team stats] infielder has inked a deal to stay with the sports powerhouse and Glenn Ordway’s “The Big Show.”
Merloni said yesterday that he auditioned last week for a spot as Michael Felger’s afternoon-drive co-host on the new WBZ-FM (98.5) “The Sports Hub.” Felger plans to go up against Ordway when the CBS station debuts Aug. 13. CBS made Merloni a lucrative offer but the Entercom-owned WEEI-AM (850) stepped up in the end, and Merloni decided to stay. Merloni’s agent, George Tobia, confirmed that he signed a deal with Entercom on Friday night but declined further details. “In the end, I just felt more comfortable staying at Entercom with Big O,” said Merloni, a Comcast SportsNet analyst and reporter. “It’s amazing - I can do as much TV as I possibly can and people still come up to me and say, ‘I love you on “The Big Show.” ’ ” Merloni, who has been on Ordway’s show for more than a year, said he also plans to do some blogging and live chats on WEEI’s Web site. He’ll be a “Big Show” regular and fill-in for other ’EEI hosts. WEEI program director Jason Wolfe said he’s thrilled Merloni chose his station. “He’s become one of the premiere sports analysts in the market right now, and having him continue his role on the Big Show, and additionally on WEEI.com, will allow us to provide superior coverage of the Sox as they head toward another playoff run,” Wolfe said. _______________________
