Sportscaster Summerall helped by poor pipesCourtesy

(July 21, 2009) Legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall's style was quick and clean. Describe the play and get out. Who would have known that he honed those skills because of faulty plumbing in a Center City building?
One of Summerall's first jobs after his playing days in the 1960s was for NFL Films in an old building at 230 N. 13th St. As current president Steve Sabol recalls, there was a short window for the segments being called by Summerall and former Eagle Tom Brookshier because of the troublesome infrastructure. "We had these old pipes that would rattle and rumble every 45 seconds," Sabol said. "Pat developed his skills of brevity and concision because he'd have to beat the pipes." On Thursday, the site where NFL Films was first housed will be officially dedicated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. There already is a plaque outside the building, which is now the national headquarters for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. NFL Films was there from 1965-79; the league has donated $2,500 to the charity. "For 45 years, we have documented history," Sabol said. "Now we are going to be part of it." Sabol remembers the area being, well, adventuresome; especially compared to the digs they moved into in Mount Laurel in 1979. "It was a dicey neighborhood and you were advised to lock your car at night. You weren't locking things in as much as you were keeping things out," he said. "On those late Sunday nights, after shooting games, we'd get into our cars and notice that we had company. The same guy used to be in my back seat all the time. I knew him because he was always wearing a dress." _______________________
