(July 20, 2009) Mike Morgan is returning to Columbia’s airwaves next month. The former play-by-play announcer for South Carolina’s men’s basketball and baseball teams will co-host an afternoon sports-talk show on WCOS-AM (1400 The Team) beginning Aug. 6, an official with the station said Thursday. The popular Morgan resigned under pressure in April in the middle of baseball season following a dispute with a major sponsor on the Gamecock Radio Network. Morgan also lost his spot at WNKT-FM (107.5 The Game), the flagship station for USC sports where Morgan co-hosted a daily talk show. In his new gig, Morgan will join former USC linebacker Corey Miller and J.C. Shurburtt, whose midday show, The Box, will move to the 3-6 p.m. slot that currently features Mark “Pack- man” Packer’s syndicated show from Charlotte. This will be Morgan’s second stint with Clear Channel, which owns WCOS. L.J. Smith, operations manager for Clear Channel Columbia, said his station is excited about adding Morgan. “As soon as Mike left the other station, we knew we wanted him,” Smith said. “After several months of talking to Mike about his situation and what he wanted to do with his career, it just seemed like a perfect fit.” Morgan also has landed another play-by-play job. He will serve in that role alongside Mike Rucker on the Carolina Panthers’ preseason television broadcasts. Morgan did not immediately return messages seeking comment. ISP Sports, USC’s media rights-holder, has not announced a replacement for Morgan, who worked the Gamecocks’ men’s basketball games since 2003. Smith said Morgan’s show also would be available on HD Radio at 96.7-2 FM. In its new time slot, the Box will compete with Morgan’s former show on 107.5 The Game for afternoon drive-time listeners. “We’re looking forward to having Mike on the air where he can say anything he wants to about Gamecock football,” Smith said. Smith said 1400 plans to air another local show in the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. spot vacated by Shurburtt and Miller’s move. _______________________
