D.C. sports radio competition begins todayCourtesy
Washington Examiner
(July 20, 2009) Washington returned to having two sports talk radio stations as of midnight. WJFK-FM is now known as “106.7 The Fan” and they seem ready to challenge longtime sports force ESPN 980 in what should become a very interesting battle for metro-area sports fans.
Chris Kinard, the program director of 106.7 The Fan, is very confident that listeners are ready to hear their sports from different voices. What is the philosophy of 106.7 The Fan when it comes to sports talk? Kinard » “We are all local, all day. Washington sports fans want to hear their sports from people who are knowledgeable, passionate, and most of all, are well versed in all local sports. We know that this is a Redskins town and we will give fans the best Skins coverage. But we also feel that Nationals, Caps, Wiz, D.C. United and many college teams fans are underserved. Washington is a very sophisticated and diverse sports town and we feel we can do a great job of reaching all the fans in the region.” What else do you have planed? Kinard » “We have Liz Drabick as our lead update anchor. We plan on adding a local primetime night show in the not too distant future. The Junkies will be doing a Redskins pregame show prior to all the games this season. We plan on launching more local weekend shows as we continue to grow.” You are the new flagship for the Wizards. What about adding more teams? Kinard » “We are proud to be the new radio home of the Wizards. We have great plans for them and we can’t wait to get started. We have added the NFL on Westwood One package so we will have plenty of football. Of course, we are the home of University of Maryland sports which has been great for us. But we really will go all out in adding the Nationals, Capitals or any local team. We feel that with our clear FM signal and our ability to offer quality support programming that we would be high on any teams list as a flagship station.” _______________________
