WFAN dominating in New YorkCourtesy
New York Newsday
(July 17, 2009) In February, Mike Francesa memorably challenged 1050 ESPN to "bring friends and ban everybody you can ban and bring a whole lot more ammunition than you have so far, because you have never gotten close, and you never will, as long as I'm sitting here."
In the spring ratings period covering April 2 through June 24, the big guy backed up his strong words. WFAN finished first from 3 to 7 p.m. among men 25-54 with an average of 7.2 percent of the audience, compared with 2.1 for 1050, which ranked 18th. That was not the only good news for WFAN. Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton finished first among men 25-54 in morning drive time by averaging 6.5 percent of the audience, the first time in the station's history it was No. 1 in that category. ESPN's "Mike & Mike in the Morning"' finished 18th at 1.9. WFAN finished third from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and first from 7 p.m. to midnight. Part of 1050's problem is its spotty signal. The station hopes it will be vastly improved as of yesterday, when it flipped the switch on a new 50,000-watt transmitter in North Bergen, N.J. _______________________
