New Miami station starting strong

(July 17, 2009) Arbitron's new method to measure radio audiences, which is supposed to be more reliable than the old system, produced a few surprising numbers this week.

Chief among them: WINZ 940, which switched to an all-sports format April 3, beat WQAM 560 and 790 The Ticket from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. because of strong performances from Dan Patrick and Jim Rome.

''That surprised me, Patrick and Rome doing as well as they are,'' said 790 The Ticket station manager Howard Davis, whose station beat WQAM and WINZ overall in the ratings period covering April 2 through June 24.

Nationally syndicated sports shows often generate meager ratings. But from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Patrick and Rome programs trounced WQAM's combination of local sports talk and Neil Rogers, whose ratings were dismal under the new system before WQAM bought out his contract last month.

Patrick (9 a.m.-noon) and Rome (noon-3 p.m.) also beat The Ticket's combo of local sports talk and ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd, but by a far more narrow margin than it did against WQAM. The Ticket has been carrying Cowherd since mid-May.

Overall, among men 25 to 54, from 6 a.m. to midnight, The Ticket was 18th in the market, with a 2.2 share, compared with WQAM's 1.6 (21st) and WINZ's 1.0 (22nd). This was the first ratings period measured by Arbitron's new system, in which participants wear ''personal people meters'' that determine what they are listening to. Under the old system, people filled in diaries.

A few other notable numbers:

• The Ticket's Dan Le Batard and Jon Weiner beat WQAM's Jim Mandich when they directly competed from 4 to 7 p.m., 3.9 share to 1.5.

• In the first month since Jorge Sedano and Krystal Fernandez became The Ticket's new morning hosts May 11, WQAM's Joe Rose beat them 3.3 to 2.2 from 6 to 10 a.m. on days when they competed directly.

That was mostly because of Rose winning 6 to 7 a.m.

• At night, 790's combination of Marlins games and Josh Friedman beat WQAM's combination of Dolphins Tonight and Damon Amendolara, 1.5 to 1.2. . . . The Ticket, which has a marketing partnership with The Miami Herald, recently moved Jonathan Zaslow to the 7-to-10 p.m. slot on nights without Marlins games. Zaslow had been doing middays before Cowherd replaced him.
