British Open golf coverage starts earlyCourtesy
USA Today
(July 16, 2009) You might as well stay up all night to make sure you're awake for the start of live British Open coverage: Online at PGA.com, it starts Thursday and Friday at 4 a.m. ET.
That online coverage will carry the world TV feed until 6:30 a.m. ET, when it will begin simulcasting TNT's TV coverage. TNT, in its last year covering the event before ESPN picks up cable TV coverage next year, will carry 28 hours — including 12 hours both today and Saturday. Besides TNT simulcasts online, viewers can also find views that won't air on TV, including close-up coverage focused on play at the ninth, 10th and 11th holes. TNT's coverage largely will be produced by ESPN/ABC — with a few TNT announcers, such as Ernie Johnson joining an on-air team of mostly ESPN/ABC announcers — and then ABC picks up the bulk of weekend coverage, including Sunday's finish. Tom Watson, who is playing the Open, is scheduled to be a weekend analyst on ABC. But the five-time British Open winner holds out hope he'll play well enough that he'll appear on-air swinging rather than analyzing: "I hope I'm not broadcasting on Saturday and Sunday very much, if at all." _______________________
