(July 6, 2009) WWOR is ready to make alterations to its newscasts next week.As previously rumored, Channel 9 in Secaucus, NJ will officially cut its weeknight news broadcasts to 30 minutes and move them to 11 p.m starting on Monday, July 13. Harry Martin and Brenda Blackmon will remain the anchors. Station sources say the weekend newscasts will be eliminated entirely, following the July 12 telecast. Sources tell Examiner.com that the changes will not result in layoffs for on-air personnel at Channel 9. The Daily News, however, reports the moves are a direct result of several talks with management on how to dramatically cut costs. Last month, WWOR chose not to renew the contracts of reporters Jennifer Jordan and Megan Vega. In recent months, WWOR has been cross-utilizing resources with sister station Fox 5 (WNYW). One of the those who stands to be impacted by the WWOR's decision to scrap weekend news programming is sportscaster Scott Stanford. Commenting to me recently while the story was still under speculation, Stanford said, "If the weekends go away, I don't know what that does for anybody. You just have to show, in this economy, in this market, that you have to be as valuable as possible." The crown jewel of Stanford's weekend duties was anchoring the 15-minute "Sunday Sports Wrap-up." That show, like the Saturday and Sunday My 9 news broadcasts, suffered the same fate. Stanford said he enjoyed hosting that program. "I look[ed] forward to that every week and doing features on people and different pieces." Stanford is a a 4-time Emmy Award winner since joining WWOR in 2003. _______________________
