DEPAUW SPORTS BROADCASTER JOHN HERRICK HONORED
(June 10, 2009) John R. Herrick, who will be a DePauw University senior in the fall, has been named one of the top 20 collegiate sports broadcasters in the country by Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA). Herrick, who has served as sports director of student radio station WGRE, broadcasts football, basketball, baseball and softball, and hosts the sports-talk program, The Sports Reporters.

The STAA All-America program recognizes the most outstanding collegiate radio sportscasters in the country and encourages collegiate sportscasters nationwide to strive to achieve their best. Candidates were ranked according to their ability across multiple sports broadcasting genres, including play-by-play for various sports, sports update anchoring and sports talk show hosting. To be eligible for consideration, sportscasters need todemonstrate expertise in at least two sports broadcasting disciplines.

"The aim of the STAA All-America program is to encourage collegiate sports broadcasters nationwide to strive to achieve their professional best," says STAA CEO Jon Chelesnik. "We also want to recognize those students who have worked exceptionally hard to develop their sports broadcasting skills."

This spring, John Herrick was awarded two first-place honors in the Society of Professional Journalists' annual Best in Indiana Journalism contest and second place and honorable mention citations in the Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters awards.
