ESPN RADIO MOVES TO FM IN LIMA
(June 4, 2009) Dan Grothaus, aka "the Barber", is happy again.

The Landeck resident can once again hear Cleveland Indians baseball on the radio at night.

Grothaus had constantly complained to yours truly about the Indians and the Cavaliers having been switched from WDOH Radio to 940 ESPN Lima four years ago when Maverick Media purchased the Delphos radio station.

Now that Maverick has moved its ESPN Sports Radio from AM to Sports Radio 93.1 The Fan, "the Barber" is ecstatic.

"It sounds fantastic. So clear and no more static," he said to me.

Last Friday, Maverick Media of Lima announced the change, effective this past Monday. All of our ESPN Radio moved to the FM side, including the Indians and the Cavs. We have also acquired the rights to Cleveland Browns football and Notre Dame football.

And Monday we began a weekday sportstalk call-in show from 5 to 7 p.m., appropriately called Sportstalk with Koza. It is a show similar to what I have done Saturday mornings for 13 years, but now at night, every weeknight, and on FM radio.

When I was growing up, FM radio was underground music. Later FM was album-oriented rock, or elevator music. The only talk you heard on FM was from public radio.

But the times, they are a changin'.

I first heard Sportstalk on FM radio last June when the wife and I went to Detroit to watch the Indians and Tigers do battle.

It was a simulcast of an AM station with the FM.

Have you checked out Columbus radio lately?

The flagship station for Ohio State football and Columbus Blue Jackets hockey, 1460 The Fan, is now simulcast on 97.1 FM.

Heard the same thing in Birmingham, Ala. when we took the family to Huntstville and the Moon Buggy competition.

Maverick Media of Lima General Manager Matt Childers told me they are doing it in Dallas too. The Ticket, 104.1 FM, there is now simulcasting with 1310 AM, The Ticket. And 105.3 The Fan has become the new flagship home of the Dallas Cowboys. Sportstalk on FM Radio is a growing trend.

Monday during our debut nightly sportstalk show, I got a text from good friend and Maverick teammate Matt Metzger.

"Nice job today," he texted. "It was nice to go home, after work, sit on the back patio, and listen to sportstalk."

Later that night, after helping emcee an auction at Shawnee Country Club, I jumped in my car eager to hear the Indians on FM radio.

"Wow," I yelled out. "It sounds so good."

I immediately called "The Barber" to hear his thoughts. Knowing how much he had complained to me the past several years, finally I was going to get a positive comment.

He didn't answer his cell phone.

The next day, bingo. "The Barber" was home and acknowledged he was happy again.

And sports fans all across Limaland are going to be much happier.

Whether you root for the Cleveland pro sports teams, Notre Dame football, high school football and basketball teams in the area, or just love to listen or participate in sports talk, whether it be ESPN Radio or locally with "Sportstalk with Koza" or "Sportsrap with Matt and Matt" (Saturday mornings at 8 a.m.), Sports Radio 93.1 The Fan is going to be your favorite radio station.

I know it is mine already. Sports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on FM Radio. I looooveeeeee it!
