(June 2, 2009) Radio coverage of the Vermont Lake Monsters will be different this season as the broadcast team, number of games broadcast and the number of stations are changing.
The Lake Monsters said Monday in a press release that WEAV-AM 960 in Colchester, also known as "The Zone," is scheduled to air 51 games for the Single-A minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Last year, all 76 of the the New York-Penn League team's games were broadcast on WEAV-AM 960 and its sister station WXZO-FM 97.7. Another change is a reduction in the broadcast team from two announcers to one, according to station spokesman Ken Barlow. Rob Ryan, play-by-play announcer for the station's coverage of University of Vermont men's basketball games, will be the lone announcer for the Lake Monsters' broadcasts. That means sportscaster George Commo, who broadcasted 56 of the 76 games last year, will not be calling Vermont minor league baseball games for the first time in 15 summers. "I'm going to miss it," Commo said. "I understand the economics, but I think there will be some unhappy fans when the word gets out. I definitely wanted to do it again. "I know Rob will do a good job and I wish him the best," Commo said. Barlow said the Lake Monsters paid a fee last summer to have the games broadcast, but the new contract does not include any payment. |
