SPORTS BROADCASTER SELWYN GETS VERSUS SHOW

(June 1, 2009) Zach Selwyn wants you to put your Web cam where your mouth is.
The Tucson-raised actor, musician and television personality — runner-up on ESPN's "SportsCenter" competition "Dream Job" and host of "Extreme Dodgeball" for three seasons on the Game Show Network — is now the face of the new viewer interactive series "Fanarchy," debuting on the Versus network next Sunday. Selwyn, 34, will throw out topics over the course of half-an-hour to a panel of seven sports enthusiasts connected to the show via their own home Web cams. The guest panel then battles verbally over topics ranging from who played the best game last night to what should happen to the latest sports figure embroiled in controversy. At the end of the show, Selwyn eliminates two of the Web-cam fans, those who couldn't bring the heat. The rest move on to next week's episode, where two more panelists, chosen from audition uploads, are added. Selwyn believes this kind of program is exactly the direction that sports talk television and radio are headed. "You watch enough sports journalists on television, who all have the same suit and tie on and the same opinion about every single game, and it gets a little boring," said the University High School graduate. "I think it is time we give the fans a shot. Let people who are real sports fans with real opinions step up and say what is on their minds." Selwyn spoke to the Star last week from his home in Los Angeles. How did you get involved with this series? "One of the producers from 'Extreme Dodgeball' thought 'Fanarchy' needed someone who knew sports and who could hold his own comedically. They called me in." What were your first impressions? "The first thing I thought was, 'This is a great idea.' To get all the sports maniacs off their couches and put them on television. Those who always claimed they could be the best sportscasters in the world. Those who think they have the best opinions and are the most knowledgeable. Every armchair quarterback who knows who should have started what game and who should have thrown what pass. "These are the guys in the bars who are arguing over every single play of the Lakers-Nuggets game. Let's get them on camera." What topics will this series cover? "It will be about anything that is happening in the sports world. Today, for example, we could talk about Memphis and their college basketball recruiting violations. We will talk about the NHL, the NBA, shades of baseball. There is always the steroid issue, that kind of stuff." The world is full of avid sports fans, many of whom are capable of expressing themselves in very colorful ways. Are you worried about cursing? "We encourage cursing. There are going to be a lot of bleeps on this show. So far what I've seen of when we shot one of these episodes has been hysterical, vulgar yet eloquent." What do you look for in a good Fanarchist? "They need to have good arguments, a unique view on something. They need to have enthusiasm and a sense of humor. They need to be able to rile up the people they are playing with, to be able to defend themselves and stand up for what they believe in. We are hoping for a lot of throwing down and trash-talking on this show. |
