SPORTS TALK SHOW LANDS UNUSUAL NEW HOME
(May 22, 2009) Broadcaster Marty Tirrell may be returning to the airwaves in Des Moines under an unconventional arrangement.

Tirrell, who was dismissed from his job at KXNO radio in March, said Thursday he will debut a new sports talk radio show on KBGG-1700 AM on June 1. But Tirrell said he won’t be employed by Citadel Broadcasting, owner of the station, but rather will rely on advertisers, including Toyota of Des Moines, to pay for the air time.

The show is to air from 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and will originate from the car dealership, not in a traditional radio studio.

“I am thrilled to provide, hopefully, compelling talk radio in a marketplace that I love,” he said.

Clear Channel, which owns KXNO and decided to fire Tirrell, Larry Cotlar and Geoff Conn after a profane argument accidentally was aired March 20, has indicated in the past that Tirrell has a non-compete clause in his contract that would prevent him from immediately joining a rival radio station.

Tirrell said Thursday that clause is not enforceable, but would not elaborate, referring questions to his attorney, Jerry Crawford. Crawford could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

Clear Channel vice president Joel McCrea said he was aware of the situation, but would not comment.

If he is able to go forward with his new show June 1, Tirrell said he plans to have guest co-hosts for the first month before settling on a permanent on-air partner.

Cotlar and Conn have landed new jobs, Cotlar also with KBGG-AM (1700), and Conn as director of sports broadcasting at Grand View University.
