BERMAN PREPARES FOR FINAL SPORTSCAST
(April 22, 2009) Len Berman will sign off from WNBC/Ch. 4 Wednesday night after 24 years as its sportscaster, but his "Spanning the World" segments will live on.

Berman said the popular highlights reels will be incorporated into the "Today" show, perhaps as early as next month.

"I'm happy to report there will be a 'next time,'" Berman wrote in an e-mail to The News Tuesday.

The segments, created when Berman worked at WCBS/Ch. 2, have been a staple of "Today" since Berman arrived at Ch. 4. There had been a question, however, of how and where Berman would go with the spots now that he's leaving.

The sportscaster said it was tough to sum up his feelings heading into the finale.

"Definitely mixed emotions," he said.

Berman is the latest high-profile departure from the station, some driven by budget, some by a change in direction. He follows, this year alone, Jay DeDapper, Carolyn Gusoff, Monica Morales, Otis Livingston, Kendra Farn, Sally Ann Mosey and Carol Anne Riddell.

Along with these changes, the station has launched a digital newsroom and new channel, New York Nonstop, and reassigned or released some of the off-camera personnel.

Berman will do his regular reports at 6 and 11 Wednesday night, and acknowledge his exit on air.

"I know they have a video and surprises planned at 6 p.m.," Berman said.

As for "Spanning the World," Berman said he didn't have a concrete starting date, but will post it at www.lenbermansports.com when it becomes available.
