SPORTS BROADCASTER SCULLY EMBARRASSED BY ATTENTION
(April 17, 2009) Vin Scully is a bit embarrassed by all the attention he's receiving from well-wishers this season. Everywhere he goes, he's congratulated on his 60th year as a Dodger broadcaster.

Scully is appreciative, but he thinks he's the one who should be giving thanks.

"I thank God," Scully said. "I have no control over the 60 years. That's what really bothers me. I don't want to take a bow for fact I've been privileged to do this 60 years.

"It really does intimidate me. I know I'm not one that should be getting applause. I should be applauding. That's what it's all about, not me."

Scully hasn't said if he'll retire, but that he'll take it year by year.

During Monday's home opener, Scully through out the ceremonial first pitch and walked a blue carpet on the field along with his wife, Sandra, and his daughters.

He threw a strike to Joe Torre and acknowledged the crowd with a wave.

"I felt embarrassed. The crowd was so great," Scully said. "Everyone's been so good and sweet. I appreciate the honor, but that's enough."

Scully tried to walk off the field afterward, but he was summoned back by a Dodgers official to say a few words.

"Sure, I did say to the crowd and I was serious, 'I want you to know I needed you far more you needed me,' " Scully said. "I've suffered some tragedies in my life. The crowd and the game has kept me up. So I am so grateful and beholden to God. I don't want to take a bow for his work. I really mean that."
