MADDEN RETIREMENT CAUSES DOMINO EFFECT
(April 17, 2009) John Madden's departure will cause a domino effect at two networks, beginning with Cris Collinsworth succeeding Madden alongside Al Michaels in the Sunday night broadcast booth.

'Chris' work is terrific -- it speaks for itself,'' Michaels said in a phone interview after reflecting on Madden's career.

Because of the promotion, Collinsworth will not continue as NFL Network's analyst on its eight-game package. Collinsworth declined interview requests Thursday because he did not want to detract from Madden's retirement, but NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol confirmed his promotion.

Collinsworth's departure from the studio means NBC will shuffle its Football Night in America cast for the third consecutive year. Jerome Bettis' future is in serious doubt -- one industry official said he was not expected to return, though Madden's retirement could change that.

Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has told people he expects to join NBC, though that is not official. Tiki Barber's role must be defined, and NBC likely will make another pitch to lure Brett Favre, who has spoken to ESPN.

Another option is Matt Millen, who appeared with Dungy and former Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren on NBC's Super Bowl programming.
