Then he felt weak. Then weaker. And then he was nearly gone. He'd landed on a 1-in-100,000 space -- Guillain-Barre syndrome. It attacks the nervous system, causing excruciating pain then eliminating one's ability to walk, speak and to breathe. Two weeks after thinking he had the flu, McGovern was paralyzed and on a ventilator.

And he remained that way for six months.

Since then, therapy and the love of family and friends -- both intensive treatments -- have returned movement, painful as it is, to his limbs. On crutches, McGovern's now up; his voice is back, too. He's not going to get over it, so he's going to do better -- he's going to go right through it.
