CBS ZOOMS IN ON FINAL FOUR

USA Today
(April 3, 2009) The NCAA Final Four, like other marquee events, gets big ratings partly because it draws plenty of viewers who otherwise don't watch the sport much.
That occasionally leads networks to add lots of close-ups away from the action — of teary cheerleaders or fans praying in the stands — to juice up coverage. And CBS director Bob Fishman, who picks the Final Four shots you'll see Saturday, certainly has the technical firepower to roam anywhere in search of instant up-close-and-personals. In working his 27th Final Four, he'll have 18 cameras — double what he had on his first Final Four. But Fishman suggests he'll treat even an NCAA title game like, well, just another game: "The only thing that affects my directing is with this much equipment, you can overcut. Then, you'll tick off the viewer who wants to see all the action. There'll still be time for the close-ups, the emotion." Especially after teams score, the usual spot to cut to contorted coaches. At least, he says, most of the time: "When there's a full-court press, I'm not going into the crowd for nonsensical shots." |
