WINFIELD JOINS BASEBALL TONIGHT

(April 1, 2009) Facing competition from the new MLB Network, ESPN is offering its latest effort to beef up its baseball: Dave Winfield, starting Sunday, joins its Baseball Tonight show.

Until MLB Network debuted this year, Baseball Tonight had been the only show allowed to do live look-ins on games. Winfield will work Sunday nights and some Mondays with John Kruk, Peter Gammons and Karl Ravech. And while his main TV experience was being a Fox analyst in 1996, he sounds confident: "I'll just be me. I'm not going to imitate anybody.

"It's not like I'm trying to make a name for myself — I have one."

Winfield will continue as a San Diego Padres executive vice president. But on-air, he says, "I hope to be as transparent as I can."
