TWINS TO TAKE CALLS DURING BASEBALL BROADCAST
(March 23, 2009) If you're planning to tune into the Twins' spring training broadcasts the next two Mondays to hear play-by-play, you're going to be in for a surprise.

Andy Price, Twins director of broadcast and game presentation, said the team plans to use the two broadcasts -- 12:05 p.m. today against Baltimore and next Monday against Tampa Bay -- as an opportunity for fans to participate in what will sound more like a call-in show.

Broadcasters John Gordon, Dan Gladden and Jack Morris will take phone calls, answer e-mails and respond to recorded questions from fans in the stands during today's game. Pitching coach Rick Anderson will join them for about an inning, and the plan is for a Twins player or two to make an appearance in the booth once his afternoon is finished.

All of this means you won't be hearing much play-by-play. "We'll let John and Dan set the lineups and get into the game, but we'll start deviating from that as quickly as we can," Price said. "We will give updates but not call balls and strikes."

Price began to toy with the idea of this type of broadcast last year after finding out the White Sox did something similar. He also points out that with 25 broadcasts spread over an extra-long spring training this is a good time to mix things up. "We need a different angle to give our fans something different to listen to and give them a forum to participate," Price said. "I think this has a chance to be something pretty good."

Both games will be carried by KSTP (1500 AM) and potentially other affiliates on the Twins Radio Network.
